| One of the earliest damselflies to appear in the spring, large reds are on the wing from late April depending on location and local weather. Mature males have red abdomens with black tails, females have rather more black in the tail, a thin dorsal stripe and pale yellow rings around the abdominal segment edges. Both sexes have black thorax with two broad red stripes and black legs. Some female variants have a greater degree of black in the abdomen. |
