Clegg bite remedies

Having totally enjoyed myself in the Sun and warmth on Sunday, I'm now paying the piper so to speak. Several CLEGG fly bites are currently driving me mad 

So anyone out there got any remedies no matter how daft, as at the moment I'd probably try it.

The best thing I have found so far is an ice pack, but with a few bites on each arm it's proving tricky to keep them in place and type  .

Jerry, first thing, get some antihistames - Zirtek, Piriteze anything like that which is just one tablet a day.

I always use Benadryl - you can get it in a tube or in liquid.  Both are good but they are pink.  The liquid is nice because you can dab it on and its quite cooling - dab loads on so that you get a thick coating.  The ointment is also very good and easier to carry about with you - again put plenty on, but gently rub it on otherwise you start the itch off again.

I have found this better than any of the mild hydrocortisone ointments you can buy over the counter.  Its good for any bites and of course sun burn.

I've also found hydrocortisone cream to be totally useless. Savlon cream works quite well for me.

Thanks folks, I'm now armed with some replelent which has 50% Deet.

Be careful with the Deet based products - they can sometimes affect plastic and rubber, such as binocular eyecups and casings, and cameras.

Thanks Indigo, I don't like to use the stuff if at all possible. It would be really nice if there was a natural repellent that worked.

Try Mosiguard if you can get it. We've been using it for years and it works on midges and mosquitos. It's based on Citriodiol, , and is one of three chemicals shown in US studies to be effective, Deet being another.

You will smell of lemon though.  It comes in various forms, we use the pump spray. Only thing is it's getting some sort of re-branding and is hard to get at the moment - though Amazon has dealers selling it.  It's also good abroad - spray a line of and ants won't cross it to enter your room!

One thing has always bothered me with all of these - you can't really handle insects wearing insect repellent.

Others swear by 'Skin so soft' - you'll smell of lavender instead. But it's not approved against mosquitos.

I've discovered that several insect repellent ranges , including Jungle Formula and Boots, now offer products containing either Citriodiol (labelled 'natural'),  or IR3535 (Kids or sensitive skin products). So there is a good choice if the shops stock them.

Remember all of these, including the DEET based products, will help repel ticks too.

Thanks for the info. I have the equivalent product from Tesco's which seems to work well for Cleggs & Mossies, however miss a patch and they find it just like that  .
